Haleakalā Upcycle Landfill Diversion Project
Stewardship Begins with the Soil.
Healthy farms and gardens begin with healthy soil. At Haleakalā Farm, we believe that what we return to the land is just as important as what we harvest from it.
The Haleakalā Upcycle Landfill Diversion Project is a community initiative dedicated to reducing organic waste, building healthy soils, and encouraging practical regenerative practices that can be adopted at home and throughout our community.
By transforming food scraps, green waste, and other organic materials into nutrient-rich compost, we help divert valuable resources from Maui’s landfill while returning those nutrients to the soil where they belong.
Rooted in Place
Our approach is grounded in a simple belief: every community has the ability to care for the land that sustains it.
Healthy soil sustains healthy plants. Healthy plants nurture healthy people. Healthy people inspire communities. Together, these small actions create a stronger more resilient Maui.
The Haleakalā Upcycle Project reflects our commitment to stewardship, regeneration, and caring for the unique place we call home.
Community Education
Through the Haleakalā Upcycle Landfill Diversion Project, Haleakalā Farm offers free educational workshops that introduce practical composting and regenerative backyard farming techniques.
Participants explore topics such as:
• Composting food and green waste
• Building healthy living soil
• Reducing household organic waste
• Compost systems for home gardens
• Simple regenerative backyard farming practices
Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just getting started, these workshops are designed to inspire practical actions that benefit both your home garden and our island community.
Why It Matters
Organic materials are valuable resources- not waste.
When composted, they become healthy soil that supports gardens, farms, and landscapes while reducing the amount of material entering Maui’s landfill.
Every compost pile, every garden, and every person who chooses to return nutrients to the soil contributes to a healthier future for our island.
